So Dependent on Technology

Technology is becoming more and more advanced with the intentions of making things in life easier, more entertaining, more accessible, and more portable.

We have become accustomed to having everything we need, right at our fingertips. Literally.

With the click of a mouse, a tap on a touch screen, or the push of a button, we can have the world of information and entertainment right before our eyes.

Why wouldn’t we be dependent on technology when everything we need and want is so accessible? This is what I believe is the rationale behind our dependence.

I personally depend on technology for everything I do. I can Skype my boyfriend while I’m far away from home, carry music in my pocket, snap pictures and share them with a single text, watch a random TV show on YouTube, and read an article online, all whenever I want.

Because I have the technology to do these things, I have become accustomed to the ease and accessibility. I don’t need to write letters home, buy a magazine, develop pictures, or dust off an old Disney VHS to watch favorite movie. Why retreat to more primitive ways when the technology to do these same things has advanced? I depend on technology to do all of this, simply because…I can.

Even my education is based upon technology. How could I survive college without a laptop to check emails from professors, type papers, or use Blackboard to receive my homework assignments and reading materials?

Anyone could argue that students have gotten through college without ever even knowing what this technology is. In today’s world, however, all of this is required. We are required to have a personal computer before starting the school year, and we are required to know how to use it. Technology is mandatory, and without it a student would be unsuccessful.

The workplace has even evolved with existence of technology. Graphic Design companies, newspapers, magazines, television networks, major social networking websites, cell phone companies, the movie industry, and the music industry all not only depend on technology, but exist because of it.

In sum, technology today dominates our lives. We use it to learn, work, communicate, be entertained, and stay informed. The domination and accessibility leads to dependence, so we are always connected.
