Radio

How has the radio industry changed?

At first the radio industry was all about listening to shows. Detective shows and hero shows were extraordinarily popular! The family would gather around the radio on Friday nights and listen to their favorite programs. This has completely changes over the years. The radio evolved into a variety of different music stations. Each station is there to attract a certain type of audience. There are some stations that play an array of different types, but for the most part, stations target a certain audience. There are tons of different stations, nation-wide. Some target older people with songs from Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, others target teenagers from the 1980's with artists such as Stevie Nicks and Michael Jackson, today's teenagers listen to stations that play their type of music and so on. Not only are the stations targeting age, but preference. Some stations play rap, some play rock, some play pop and so on. The difference now is also the times in which the radio is listened to. Since the development of the television families no longer sit around to listen to radio programs. Most of radio listening happens in the car for most Americans now.
