Music greatly influences society. It is everywhere from elevators, to restaurants, buses, gyms, and nearly all stores and public places. Music can have a huge effect on the mood of the listener, and is used by these enterprises to do just so. Even if somewhere doesn't provide music, we have now supplied ourselves with everything we need to bring it with us.
Because of its widespread usage, this billion dollar industry has become a way of life and career for many people. However, in recent years, some of the money that would normally be spent on rights to music and buying CD's has evaporated. Traditional methods of acquiring music have been replaced with programs like Napster, Limewire, Mojo, and general sending of files, which makes it very easy for listeners to obtain music for free or at a very discounted price.
Artists, production companies, and everyone else that aid with creating the music that we all love are taking a financial hit because of our stingyness. Although I have to admitt that I have acquired all of my 3,000 song library by the use of free methods, looking back it is all of us that suffer in the long run. When the people who are in charge of producing songs aren't making the money they deserve, it is the quality of music that suffers in the long run. Maybe it is time that we think about what motivates these people to entertain us, because without money, there is no music as we know it.
