In the beginning when downloading started an almost everyone was doing it for free, it caused a lot of stores that sold music to go out of business.
But the government went on a spree of their own and put suit against certain Internet organizations and individuals who were downloading or swapping music without paying for it.
This was considered copyright infringement. After a lot of controversy new ways of downloading came about in which the individual paid for the downloads.
Although people had to pay for the music it was much better because it is still cheap and it does not cause viruses on ones computer like other systems did, also it is not illegal.
Unfortunately for retail stores, which were the leading place to get music, this new convenient method still put them out of business.
For example why pay for a whole CD when your only going to listen to four songs out of it instead just buy the four songs individually instantly to ones computer.
This has also changed the way people listen to music, now with no more CD’s no one listens to music with CD players.
People use mp3 players or ipods which has music put on them from the downloads on their computer.
