Public relations is a crucial aspect of any business. Every company wants to be viewed by the public in a positive light, both for the products they produce and their reputation in general. Unfortunately for public relations professionals, it is usually when things go horribly wrong that they are called on for their expertise.
Toyota is the perfect example of this statement. Until recently, public relations was a much smaller part of what they do, and simple advertising was all they needed to supplement their name for quality and value. Unfortunately, recalls and stories of cars being out of control due to malfunctions, has brought the company to its knees. As Toyota has suffered from a huge hit to its reputation and sales, it has been calling on public relations more than ever to control the damage. How the company handles this situation now will have a dramatic impact on how they will be able to move forward in the future. So far they have come out with numerous commercials apologizing for the recalls and there are still many loyal customers who are not compromising the service they have received in the past because of these few incidents.
So far this has been a perfect example of how good public relation moves can save a company in a time that would otherwise be devastating.
