PR: Improving Images and Publicity or Hiding the Truth?

Public Relations can be both good and bad for various reasons. PR is necessary in mass media, and communications. PR can be used to promote, for publicity, fund-raising and more. PR is needed to keep relationships positive between businesses and other groups.

One example of where PR is a beneficial thing is with advertisements for companies. During the Great Depression, General Motors was seen in a negative light, and as too impersonal. They were advised to use PR to seem friendlier in order to get their automobiles to appeal to more people.

Another example of this is during WWI. Woodrow Wilson asked George Creel to create a new agency that was governmentally based, in order to make war more popular. They had speakers, magazines, posters, and movies all promoting the war. WWI became a popular cause to fight for after people saw it being promoted.

PR can face issues and trouble when they must face a crisis. They must find ways to help companies reinforce their values and not ruin their reputation. This can be done through statements, or even events like teleconferences in which companies address their mistakes or takes questions from people. The way agencies handle this can draw the line between good and bad public relations. People sometimes also see PR as a façade, meaning that only positive aspects are shown, and items may lack details. However, this is necessary to keep the image of whoever is represented.
